Dr Michael Likely is an experienced and highly regarded independent medical examiner, able to give an expert opinion on a broad range of psychiatric issues.
Dr Likely was born and raised in the United Kingdom where he attended St Thomas’ Medical School at the University of London. He then completed various residencies in England. Initially, as a Senior House Officer in Psychiatry at St James’ Hospital, Portsmouth, England. He then came to Australia for a time to the Gold Coast Hospital, Southport, Queensland with rotations through posts in neurosurgery, general medicine and psychiatry before returning to the UK briefly to be a Registrar at St James’ Hospital, Portsmouth. He then returned to Queensland permanently as a Trainee under the auspices of Queensland Rotational Scheme in Psychiatry
Dr Likely has been in private practice in Townsville since 1997 as a treating psychiatrist in general adult psychiatry. The bulk of his treating practice pertains to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Dr Likely saw service as a Royal Marine Commando between 1980 and 1985, including deployment to the Falklands and Northern Ireland. He served the mandatory four years as a rifleman and two years as a medical assistant. He has a special interest in combat related trauma, workplace injury and medico-legal cases.
He regularly compiles medicolegal reports for organisations such as the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, WorkCover Queensland, law firms and insurance companies. He also has extensive forensic experience in terms of compiling pre-sentencing reports, assessing inmates at the Townsville Correctional Centre and preparing parole reports.
