An independent medical examination (IME) is an assessment carried out by a specialist who is not involved in your ongoing treatment. The purpose of the IME is to provide an objective, expert opinion about your mental health, usually for legal, insurance, or workplace matters. The psychiatrist will receive documents from the referrer regarding your claim, discuss your history and current symptoms, and may ask questions about how your condition affects your daily life.
During the IME, you’ll have the opportunity to explain your experiences and answer questions in a confidential and professional setting. The psychiatrist uses this information to prepare a detailed report that helps decision-makers understand your condition and its impact.
What is an independent medical examination?
During your psychiatric independent medical examination (IME), the psychiatrist will talk with you about your mental health history, current symptoms, and how your condition affects your daily life. You may also be asked questions about your work, relationships, and any treatments you’ve had. The session is confidential, and the psychiatrist is there to gather information, not to provide ongoing treatment.
The IME usually lasts around 60-90 minutes, and it’s normal to feel a little nervous. You don’t need to prepare anything special, just be ready to answer questions honestly and openly. After the examination, the psychiatrist will write a report for the referring party, providing an objective opinion.

Bring Photo ID
Please bring a valid photo ID with you.
Appointment changes
If you need to reschedule, please contact the referring entity (eg. solicitor) that arranged your examination.
Medical Records
Bring any relevant records, like X-rays or scans, for the specalist to review.
Timely Arrival
Arrive at least 15 minutes early to avoid delays; we may reschedule if you're late.
Appointment Duration
Plan for 1 to 2 hours for the assessment.
Medical Advice
The specialist doesn't provide medical advice to you relating to your condition.
Medical Devices
Bring any necessary medical devices, like glasses or hearing aids.
Medication
Continue taking prescribed medications and bring a list of them.
Online Assessments
If you are booked for an online assessment, set up your device beforehand with good lighting.

In some instances, you may be able to have a friend or relative attend the assessment with you as a support person, however, permission needs to be requested from the medical specialist prior to the assessment date. It is important to note that the support person is not allowed to participate in the assessment, and they may be asked to leave if they become disruptive to the process. If the interference persists, the specialists reserve the
right to cut short the assessment.
According to law, you cannot record the assessment unless you have sought the permission of Medibytes Legal. Medibytes Legal does not allow the examinee to record assessments.
The report of your Independent Medical Exam with be sent directly to the referrer. You may request a copy of the report from the referrer. In some cases, it may be advised that the report is released to you via your general practitioner. Please do not call our office for information about your report.
The medical specialist will prepare an independent medico-legal report using all the information gathered on the day of the interview with you and from the material provided by the referrer. The report may take anything from a few weeks or more to complete, depending on many things, including the type of assessment being undertaken, the complexity of injuries/conditions, and whether further information is required. The report is a legal document and may be used to make decisions around your case or as evidence
in courts or tribunals.

Confidentiality Commitment: Our team is committed to maintaining the confidentiality of all interactions. No part of the Telehealth assessment will be recorded, and your information will only be accessed by authorized personnel involved in your case.
